Stoke City dealt blow in pursuit for big-money winger

Published

on

Stoke City have had a bid for Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie rejected as the club look to continue their big summer spending spree.

The Potters have already brought in Oghenekaro Etebo and Benik Afobe, whilst Joe Allen has signed a new deal.

However, with Xherdan Shaqiri expected to depart in the coming weeks, Gary Rowett has been looking for a replacement and has targeted Ritchie.

Yet, Chronicle Live are reporting that the Magpies have rejected a £15m bid and that Rafa Benitez would be unwilling to sell unless he can get a replacement lined up himself.

Newcastle are thought to have identified Kenedy and Andros Townsend as two who he wants to sign.

The report also states that Stoke would be prepared to offer an incredible £75,000 a week to attract the 28-year old back to the Championship.

Ritchie has proven himself as a top player in the second-tier over the years, starring in promotions for Bournemouth and Newcastle.

The Verdict

Stoke have made some big moves in the transfer window already and Ritchie would be another statement signing.

Clearly, he is going to cost a lot, both in terms of wages and a fee, but the owners are prepared to back Rowett big time it seems.

A deal is going to be tough to conclude as the North East side won’t sell on the cheap but everyone connected with the club will hope a deal can be reached in the end.
