Stoke City have sacked manager Gary Rowett after just over seven months in charge of the Potters.

The former Derby boss leaves the club in 14th position in the Championship and his final game in charge was a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

Rowett arrived at the Bet365 Stadium in May after he controversially decided to leave the Rams for the Staffordshire club.

And, he was backed significantly in the transfer market over the summer. The likes of Benik Afobe, Ryan Woods and Tom Ince arrived for hefty fees, whilst they also managed to keep hold of Joe Allen and Jack Butland.

That meant they started the season as favourites for the title but things have not gone to plan at all.

As well as the poor results, Rowett has been heavily critcised for his style of play, with the fans voicing their unhappiness at the displays in recent weeks.

Stoke confirmed the sacking on their website this morning and revealed that members of his backroom team had also departed.

Former player Rory Delap, Kevin Russell and Andy Quy will be in charge until a successor is named.

The Verdict

This seemed inevitable after results in recent weeks and you have to say that Rowett can have few complaints.

Stoke had a huge summer in terms of recruitment and who they kept and they understandably started as favourites but the manager has failed with these players.

Now, it's about bringing in a replacement as they look to close the eight-point gap on the top six.
