Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City are closing in on the signing of Wigan Athletic star Nick Powell, according to reports from the Stoke Sentinel.

The 25-year old has been a key player for the Latics over the last few years, scoring 15 goals which helped Paul Cook's side clinch promotion from League One this term.

The attacking midfielder has been another influential figure for the Latics this season, scoring eight goals and producing six assists, and helping the club avoid the drop straight back down to the third tier.

But with his contract set to expire at the DW Stadium, a host of high-profile clubs have been linked with Powell's signature, with Leeds United amongst many being credited with an interest.

Now, it is claimed that Stoke City are set to win the race for the playmaker, who will be available on a free transfer in the summer.

Nathan Jones has acted quickly in the transfer window, with the Potters also set to sign Millwall striker Lee Gregory on a free transfer.

The Verdict

This has come from out of nowhere, but what a signing this would be for Stoke if they manage to land him.

He is far too good to be playing in the bottom-half of the Championship, and you would imagine that Stoke will be challenging for promotion next season.

Jones simply isn't messing about, and Stoke are definitely a team to watch if they sign Powell and Gregory both on free transfers.

He liked to play with a number 10 at Luton, and Powell would certainly fit the bill.
