Stoke City are set to sign Tommy Smith from Huddersfield, with the right-back undergoing a medical ahead of a switch to the Potters.

It is a move that has been in the pipeline for a while now, after reports emerged last week stating that the Staffordshire outfit have managed to see off interest from Celtic to land Smith.

And, an announcement appears to be close following an update from the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (15:04) that revealed the defender is currently having a medical ahead of finalising the transfer.

Smith was the captain for the Terriers in recent years and starred as they won promotion against all odds in 2017 before then featuring 24 times as they once again pulled off a shock by preserving their Premier League status.

However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular in the previous campaign, making just 15 appearances as Huddersfield were relegated, although a combination of injuries and suspension didn't help at various points throughout the season.

Should the move go through he will be the seventh new arrival for Nathan Jones this summer and could make up part of a new back four going into the new season with Liam Lindsay and Stephen Ward who have also joined.

The Verdict

This is no surprise as it seems pretty clear that Huddersfield are prepared to cash in on the player and a move at this stage of his career may be what Smith needs.

From Stoke's perspective, they need a new right-back as it has been something of a problem position over recent years, with a more experienced option to Tom Edwards required.

If they secure Smith, they will have someone who has proven he can play at this level and importantly has won promotion before.

So, it's a no-brainer really and fans should be happy that this deal seems set to go through in what has been a very busy summer so far for Stoke.
