Stoke City are on the verge of making their seventh signing of the summer after reportedly agreeing a £4 million fee for Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith.

The Potters were rumoured to be competing with Scottish giants Celtic for the 27-year-old's signature but it appears the Championship club are close to completing the deal.

According to Football Insider, a fee has been agreed between the two clubs and the Terriers have given Smith permission to discuss personal terms with Stoke and undergo a medical today.

The report suggests that the Potters moved fast to try and complete the signing of Smith after his agent held crunch talks with the club’s chief executive Tony Scholes in Holland.

Huddersfield are understood to feel they have adequate depth at right-back and are willing to let their club captain leave in this transfer window.

Smith did not feature in either of the Terriers' pre-season friendlies in Austria yesterday, according to Examiner Live, and it seems his career at the John Smith's Stadium is nearly at an end.

The 27-year-old has made 200 appearances for Huddersfield since arriving at the club in 2012.

The move would continue Nathan Jones' busy summer as he looks to prepare his squad for promotion challenge during his first full season at the Bet365 Stadium.

The Verdict

Smith has been linked away from Huddersfield throughout the summer and this looks like a transfer that works for both parties.

Full-backs play an important role in Jones' signature 4-4-2 diamond formation, as evidenced by the success and subsequent Premier League transfers of Luton Town full-backs James Justin and Jack Stacey, so Smith looks likely to play an important role for Stoke this season.

£4 million seems a fair price for a defender who is experienced in the Championship and should be a regular in the Potters side this season.

It is a blow for Huddersfield to see their club captain depart, especially to join a promotion rival, but the Terriers do have cover at right-back.

In addition to 24-year-old Florent Hadergjonaj, Jan Siewert has new signing Herbert Bockhorn, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund II last week.
