Stoke City manager Nathan Jones has slammed Liam Lindsay for his mistake that saw Sheffield Wednesday record a 1-0 home win against the Potters on Tuesday night.

The Scot - a summer signing from Barnsley - replaced the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers in the 27th minute of the first half, and he would have been eager to make an impact.

Lindsay did make an impact on the game, but in completely the wrong way. He failed to clear what looked to be a simple through ball, allowing Massimo Luongo to run through on goal and score for the Owls.

That goal proved to be decisive, as Wednesday moved up to third spot in the Sky Bet Championship table after an impressive start to life under Garry Monk.

Stoke have made a handful of defensive mistakes this term that have seen them get off to a bitterly disappointing start this season.

And speaking to the Stoke Sentinel after the game, Jones could not hide his frustrations at Lindsay's mistake, saying: "If we have an error-free game we usually get something out of it.

"It was a long ball we lost on the cover. It was a poor clearance and it’s hard to fathom because we have gifted them three points.

"If you don’t take your chances and make errors you put yourself on the back foot and that’s symptomatic of us. Too many ridiculous goals."

Stoke will now be looking to bounce back and claim their third in four games this coming weekend, as they prepare to take on Millwall at The Den.

The Verdict

It's not like Jones to criticise his players, but if Lindsay doesn't make that mistake, then Stoke go into the half-time break drawing and full of confidence.

They have made so many mistakes this season - we've seen them crumble after Jack Butland's howler against Preston North End for instance.

They just need to keep on working hard and focus on ironing out these errors, because they have shown in recent weeks that they can be a very good side once they get going.
