Charlton Athletic lost 2-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers this afternoon and there is a risk they will not have a lot to play in the remainder of the season.

The Addicks are a long way off the play-offs, and have put in displays that have quietened down any relegation concerns in the last month or so, but with off-field uncertainty persisting, there will be other things to focus on in SE7.

Todd Kane and Matt Penney have come in on loan this month while Macauley Bone has arrived on a deal until the end of the season.

Jake Forster-Caskey, Craig MacGillivray and Conor McGrandles have left the club since the turn of the year, the latter on loan, and there could be further outgoing and incoming business before Tuesday's deadline.

Dean Holden sent the following message to Addicks supporters on the remainder of the window, when he spoke to Sky Sports after this afternoon's defeat.

He said: "I think it's going to take more than one window.

"We're still in the market for one or two positions and we're confident there's good work going on and we'll see."

It is a fairly vague response from Holden with it not entirely clear who is making the decision upstairs at The Valley.

The Verdict

Penney looked the part in his debut against the Trotters, the 24-year-old is out of contract at Ipswich Town at the end of the season, therefore, should things go well, there could be an opportunity for the Addicks to bring him in for free on permanent terms.

Technical Director Andy Scott told supporters that there was money to spend in late December, however no such funds have been spent so far, while it has been revealed Scott is only at the club on a contract until the end of the month.

Pushes for clarity on the club's off-pitch situation will likely resume at the end of the window, as takeover rumblings have gone quiet since the turn of the year.
