Sunderland crashed out of the Papa John's Trophy last night with a 1-0 defeat at home to Oldham Athletic.

Harry Vaughan's 53rd minute strike proved to be the difference between the two teams at the Stadium of Light, on a night where a lot of fringe players were awarded the chance to impress in the first-team environment.

While the league is the ultimate objective, Sunderland have a competitive and large squad and would have been hoping to progress.

The Black Cats' overall ambition is to secure Championship football next season, and whilst they have picked up seven points from their last three matches, that was on the back of a three-game point-less run.

Sunderland made an excellent start to the campaign, but those three defeats, and the manner of the three losses, certainly disrupted the feel-good factor in the north east.

Sunderland now have three home games in a row, where they will be striving to continue in making the Stadium of Light a fortress.

They now have one less distraction in their pursuit of League One glory, despite it being a disappointing way to exit the cup.
