Sunderland have completed the signing of QPR midfielder Josh Scowen, which has drawn an excited response from many fans of the North East club.

The 26-year-old is the third arrival of the January transfer window so far, with defender Bailey Wright arriving on loan from Bristol City and striker Kyle Lafferty joining on a free transfer.

With Dylan McGeouch leaving and Grant Leadbitter seeming out of favour, Phil Parkinson has added some well-needed reinforcements in central midfield.

What season is this Sunderland picture from?

The club announced late yesterday evening that they had signed Scowen on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Englishman has been a bit-part player for QPR this season, making the majority of his league appearances as a substitute.

A versatile and hard-working central midfielder, Scowen is proven at League One level and helped Barnsley win promotion from the division in the 2015/16 campaign.

Speaking to the club website, the 26-year-old revealed his excitement at joining the Nort East club.

He said: “I just want to show the gaffer what I can do and get in the team, so that I can help the club keep winning games. I feel fit and I’m raring to go.”

Parkinson revealed that this was a deal the Black Cats had been working on for some time.

He said: “We identified him early in the window and it took a while to get the deal over the line, as we were competing with several other clubs for his signature.

“We have been patient, and the chairman and the board have worked hard to finalise a deal this afternoon.”

Scowen’s arrival appears to have been well received by fans of the North East club, many of whom took to Twitter to express their thoughts.
