Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has turned down a bid for the club worth a reported £70m, according to the Chronicle.

The Black Cats are 12 months into Donald's ownership, but it is no secret that the Sunderland owner would welcome some more funds and an injection of cash into te club.

However, Donald has made it clear in the last few months that he simply won't be selling the club on to just anybody, and amid a reported bid from Malaysian investors, Donald has moved to reject the bid and keep hold of the reins himself on Wearside.

Sunderland remain in with a big chance of winning promotion back to the Championship, a move which will add value to the club and put them back within a shout of making a run at a return to the Premier League eventually.

Donald has invested some of his own money and steadied the ship somewhat following the spell under previous owner Ellis Short, and he is keen to protect the interests of his club going forward.

The Sunderland owner has spoken of not allowing someone to come in and treat the club 'like a toy' and he is obviously keen to protect his investment and club. Donald had admitted though that he will not hold the club back if potential owners want to come into the club and do 'a Man City' as he called it.

The Verdict

Donald seems like a brilliant owner to me and is exactly the sort of person you need running your club at that level.

Sunderland will be back, and their potential is massive it has to be said.

Donald though is right to keep his wits about him, and he is clearly only willing to sell to the right person or group.
