Sunderland owner Stewart Donald insists that the club's badge won't be changed unless the fans want it, following recent comments from executive director Charlie Methven.

The Chronicle revealed how Methven told a fans meeting that they were considering changing the current badge for a 'simpler design'.

However, Donald told the Sunderland Echo that they won't be changing the design because of the cost and insists any call on something like that should be down to the supporters.

"I'm not 100% sure what Charlie said, I haven't checked that, but the club badge isn't for Charlie or I or the board to change, it's for the fans. If the fans wanted to change the badge, we'd have a poll and make a change if that's what they wanted to do.

"But it would be expensive to change the badge, it's everywhere, so we would like to keep it as it is."

Championship side Leeds United tried to change their badge at the start of the season and were met with widespread ridicule, which prompted the club to have a rethink.

Sunderland have had their current crest since 1997, when they left Roker Park to move to the Stadium of Light.

The Verdict

This is sensible from Donald and the fans will appreciate that he is considering them on such an important decision.

As he says, it should be down to the supporters as it's their club, not down to individuals who are in charge at the time.

Either way, it appears that a new design will not be forthcoming and most will be glad for that.
