Glasgow giants Rangers are eyeing a move for Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, according to respected journalist Alan Nixon.

The 21-year-old has been in superb form for the Latics over the course of the season, making in excess of 50 appearances and becoming one of the standout performers outside of the top three divisions in English football.

Those performances have seemingly caught the eye of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who is reportedly very keen to speak to Edmundson and complete a deal between the two club.

Predominantly a central defender but capable of playing across the back four, Edmundson would be hard pushed to turn down any sort of approach from Gerrard and Rangers, with the Ibrox club edging ever closer to being able to overthrow Celtic at the top of the SPL.

Oldham will be well aware that they sit in a precarious position in terms of being able to keep hold of their star youngster, with any bid of decent value likely to be heavily considered by the Latics board.

Edmundson only moved to the club from non-league AFC Fylde in January of last year, but has since gone from strength to strength as he has cemented his place in the first XI at Boundary Park.

The Verdict

This is worrying for Oldham this, and when Rangers come knocking, it's hard for a player to turn them down.

Gerrard's influence will also play a big part no doubt, and it would be a big surprise to see Edmundson stay with the Latics if Gerrard does come calling.
