Steve Sidwell makes big Leeds United admission

Leeds United took the early ascendancy in the Championship on Wednesday night as they climbed to top spot after a 1-0 victory over Brentford.

Arsenal loanee, Eddie Nketiah, scored the only goal of the game and his first in the Championship having been on the pitch for only four minutes.

It was a welcome goal, and means that the Whites continue their unbeaten start to the season having picked up ten points from their opening four games.

One man who has achieved promotion in his career is Steve Sidwell. He was part of the Brighton side who recently got promoted, and the Reading side that holds the record number of points in one season – 106.

Speaking on Sky Sports show, The Debate, Sidwell said:¬†“Leeds, what a club.¬†Massive club.

“They deserve to be back in the Premier League. Elland Road, when that place is bouncing there is no better place to go and play an away game.

“I say massive club, they are huge. I’m talking in terms of fans and then they go and support. When they were in their bad times during these last few years, they still go.

“They’re on the up and they were so close last year. Don’t get me wrong, the Championship is a long, long slog, but they way Bielsa is, he has been a breath of fresh air. I love him. I think he’s great and I’ll think they’ll do it.”

The Verdict

Steve Sidwell won’t be the only pundit who thinks Leeds have a great chance at promotion. The former midfielder has backed them very early, and could look rather red faced if their charge for the Premier League begins to halt.

He’s right in saying the Championship is a long slog, which it is. The Leeds squad is quite small this season and that could prove to be their undoing despite their undoubted quality.

Injuries are already coming thick and fast, and Marcelo Bielsa works his side hard. It should be an interesting watch this season.
