Steve Morison is out of contract in the summer, but he has pinpointed what he needs to do in order to receive a new offer from Neil Harris.

In an interview with NewsAtDen, the 35-year-old has laid bare what needs to be done for him to extend his stay in London.

Harris had previously hinted that the club captain could be in line for a new contract before the striker himself laid out the condition to any such proposal.

“We just have to make sure the manager stays here, don’t we?” Morison said.

“We have to keep winning games, stay in the Championship and see what happens.

“It will probably be towards the end of the season when we know where we are. When that happens hopefully, it’ll mean I’ll still be here next season.”

“The manager knows I’m here and I’m ready. My mindset is always the same. He knows he can call on me when he wants, whether it’s to start or to come on.

“As long as I’m still impacting the game in a positive way; I’m not too worried.”

This season has been somewhat frustrating for the forward who has only started 12 times, coming off the bench on 15 occasions in the league.

Compare that to last year’s 38 starts, his place is under threat, especially with the preferred pairing of Lee Gregory and Tom Elliott this term being one of the reasons for his reduced role.

Morison has one goal to his name this season and will be hoping to add more and play more, too, in order to get the results the club needs to stay in the division and keep Harris in a job.

The verdict

Morison is right to a degree; the team must stay in the league and that in turn keeps Harris in a job.

Do that, and play well enough to influence games, then he will get a new deal.

Being that he will be 36 not too long after next season starts, he will have to show his worth and probably make do with another season of substitute appearances.

His impact is clear, he can have a huge say in a game late on, and his status amongst the ground on the training bitch cannot be ignored.
