Steve Morison has put pen-to-paper on a fresh deal with Cardiff City after impressing since being given the main managerial role at the club.

He's managed to steer the Bluebirds away from the relegation spots in terms of their points total and whilst they remain in the lower half of the division, they look like they could be fairly safe.

They've begun to pick up more points and more wins and it has now led to the boss being offered new terms.

This new deal though will only keep him at the Welsh outfit for a further 12 months - but Morison himself has revealed to Dai Sport that the length of the new deal is not important and that it is 'irrelevant.'

The manager is in the leading role for the first time in his career right now. Having led the Cardiff reserve team, he was yet to lead a first-team squad before this season.

After the Welsh side struggled at the beginning of this campaign though with Mick McCarthy at the helm, they decided to part ways with the former Ipswich boss and let Morison take the wheel. After doing a solid job, the manager was then awarded the job on a full-time basis.

Now, having managed to take Cardiff to 16 points clear of the relegation zone, it looks like they could be able to hold onto their Championship status this campaign.

Considering their form since the January window too, they could even kick on under Morison next year.

He has now been rewarded with fresh terms but rather than being offered a longer deal that would undoubtedly show faith in the boss, he has only been given an additional 12-month contract. However, speaking to Dai Sport, the boss himself has revealed he feels it is 'irrelevant.'

He said: "The length of a manager’s contract is irrelevant. If you are doing well, you will continue to do well.

“If you are not doing well, you will be out of a job, whether you have a three year contract or a one-year contract. From my point of view, it is just about being able to take the reins and move forward.

"I know we have a job to do next season, but we also know we still have a job to do this season. We are not quite there yet."

The Verdict

Steve Morison has certainly earned the right to continue in his role as Cardiff boss and has so far done a solid job at leading them away from the drop zone.

They might still be in the lower echelons of the division but that is largely down to the disappointing start that they had to the season. If they had played then the way that they are now, they could potentially be much higher up the table.

Morison perhaps wasn't the most attractive name to take the reins when he was initially appointed but he has certainly done the business and has plenty of plans in place to help the club, as well as implementing his philosophy already.

The best move then from Cardiff has been to tie his future down to the Bluebirds and now he can focus on ensuring that they are prepared and ready to kick on going forward.
