Steve McClaren faced the press this morning in his first conference since becoming manager of Championship side QPR.

The R's had a below-par season in the Championship with their away form particularly of concern under Ian Holloway.

Indeed, fans also grew increasingly tired of his work in the dugout and, duly, he has been replaced by former Derby and Middlesbrough man McClaren.

Despite their problems in 17/18, though, this is an R's side with potential thanks to some great young players bristling with confidence and, if McClaren can coax the potential out of them, they could have a bright future as a team.

It's clear, though, that this summer he wants to bring some experience into the side in order to keep the balance right:

The Verdict

McClaren's appointment might have been welcomed by a few groans when it was announced but there is evidently method behind his arrival.

He's got a decent record as a coach if not always as a manager and with all the young players at the R's, he could help them reach their full potential.

It is a risk, of course, but one that could pay off and if the former Middlesbrough man brings in players of experience that can help that along, fans will be fairly content.
