QPR boss Steve McClaren is set to be handed a major boost with the news that a key defender is to be offered a new deal to extend his stay at Loftus Road.

According to West London Sport, Angel Rangel is set to sign a contract extension with the Championship club after making the right-back spot his own since arriving at the club in the summer from Swansea.

The Spaniard has made 12 starts this season for McClaren's side, and despite the return of the previous injured Darnell Furlong, Rangel has managed to retain his place in the starting XI.

The full-back has certainly played a vital role in their positive start to the season and he will be keen to progress at Loftus Road, with the Hoops just three points adrift of the play-off positions.

The 35-year-old joined the club in August on a five-month deal and he evidently has made a good impression with a potential extension on that current deal looking likely in the near future.

McClaren recently praised the full-back and labelled him as 'the signing of the season' in a recent press conference.

"Angel Rangel must be so far the signing of the season. He’s 35-years-old, came on trial and we signed him and he’s performed so well."

Rangel will be looking to continue his good run in the side when they host Brentford this weekend.

The Verdict

News of the offer will be a huge boost to QPR's play-off ambitions this season.

Many fans wouldn't have predicted their season would turn out to be a promotion-chasing one, but since the arrivals of the likes of Rangel, Tomer Hemed and Nahki Wells, they have looked like a completely different team.

They will be keen to get a win over their local rivals Brentford this weekend and I'm confident that they can add to Brentford's recent woes.
