The start of the 2018/19 season wasn't entirely smooth for former England manager Steve McClaren.

His QPR side struggled to bring players to the club amidst rumours of a transfer embargo, hot on the heels of a record fine for breaking Financial Fair Play regulations.

They started the season significantly weaker than they finished the last campaign, resulting in a humiliating 7-1 defeat at the hands of West Brom.

Since then McClaren has been able to add a couple of players and his side have got a foothold in the Championship, putting together a good run which has seen them lose just twice in their last eight league games.

Following their impressive 1-1 draw with Derby yesterday, McClaren hailed the impact of his new faces.

"They’ve made a hell of a difference, the new players," he told Football London. "From the first four games we were pointless, conceding goals, Wells, Hemed, Geoff Cameron have come in and made a big difference to the team which I knew they would do."

He revealed there is still work to do in front of goal, but the new arrivals have helped turn around their fortunes.

"We’ve had to be patient in the loan market and the team looks better. In the last eight games [we’ve got] 14 points and we’ve started to not at the present moment look up, but when we start scoring goals maybe we can."

Rangers have scored just nine times this season, the same as ailing Rotherham and the joint lowest in the entire Football League.

The Verdict

McClaren is right, his new faces did turn their fortunes around because to put it simply, QPR were awful in the opening few matches.

They're looking better now, they won't be troubling the top six but they should have enough to keep themselves away from the bottom three,, even with a transfer embargo in January.
