QPR lost their opening fixture of the new Championship season 1-0, becoming the only side not to score in the second-tier on the opening weekend.

The game marked Steve McClaren's return to the English game, but Alan Browne's 50th minute strike gave Preston the victory at Deepdale.

And, McClaren, in his sixth managerial role in England, was clear that his young squad desperately needed some new additions ahead of the transfer window closing this Thursday.

We’ve brought in one player and things from last season – seven clean sheets and three away wins – are still going to be there. We’ve made one signing. I think we need more and we’re still searching for that," he told West London Sport.

Although the window for permanent transfers closes this week, the loan window is open until August 31st and it is that market in which McClaren hopes to find the necessary bodies to strengthen his side's prospects.

There’s a few weeks to go before the end of the loan window and I think we will be looking to strengthen the squad. How we do that will go a long way to say how we’re going to do this season.”

Toni Leistner is the only player to arrive at Rangers this summer, he started at Deepdale alongside Joel Lynch in defence.

The Verdict

Many had pondered on how the young guns of Loftus Road might do this season and although one game doesn't make a season, Saturday did leave it very clear that they need some additional experience in the squad.

The concern would be experience rarely comes via the loan market, it is usually the route in which young, hungry players come into the side. McClaren will need to find players with Championship experience, ideally in the mid 20s or older who can affect a game. Those players do not usually come for free after four games of a season.
