Birmingham City had the perfect start to life under Steve Cotterill when they beat high-flying Cardiff on Friday night. The win was much-needed after the poor start to the season the side had made. Although, they are still just one place outside the relegation zone.

Whilst the likes of Che Adams and Isaac Vassell caught they eye with their searing pace and ability on the ball, and were rightly lauded by their manager, there was another player Cotterill reserved serious praise for. The ex-Bristol City boss highlighted the contribution of Jonathan Grounds, who is set to make his 150th appearance for the Blues this weekend at Millwall.

Speaking to the club's official site, Cotterill said; “Jonathan Grounds is a bit of an unsung hero. I don't think Jonathan quite gets the credit. People always see... because he's not necessarily that dynamic left-back who flies down the left wing all the time.” He also commended his ability to take instructions on board immediately. “Obviously I worked with Jonathan last year. He's an intelligent footballer, you know. You don't have to tell him many times. You explain something to him and he understands it.”

The Verdict

Jonathan Grounds is a solid but unspectacular player which means he can go under the radar. To play 150 games for Birmingham proves he is impressing the right people and that includes Steve Cotterill. Grounds brings a balance to the defence with previous managers preferring a right-footer at left-back and defended very well against Cardiff on Friday night against their very quick frontline.
