Steve Cotterill is the man tasked with saving Birmingham City from relegation to the third tier of English football, after the Blues suffered a nightmare start to the campaign under Harry Redknapp.

Despite the former Nottingham Forest boss’ appointment at St Andrew’s, not much has changed, and the Blues still find themselves in a desperate situation towards the bottom of the table.

A point at home to league leaders Wolves this evening would see Birmingham move out of the bottom three at the expense of Bolton Wanderers, but with the visitors having won five on the bounce, the match will be no easy tie.

Still, Cotterill will go into the tie with confidence, knowing that anything is possible during a huge derby clash under the lights at St Andrew’s.

The 53-year-old knows the importance of the fans in his side’s fight for survival, and praised the Blues faithful ahead of tonight’s game.

“It (support) means everything to you when you’re a manager,” Cotterill told the club’s official site.

“When you go away from home and you’ve got the numbers following you that we have had, it’s not like an away game.

“If you start the game brightly, your 2000 fans can be heard and their 20,000 can’t be.

“Unfortunately we haven’t always given them that, but it’s something we’re trying to rectify.”

The Verdict

Cotterill is saying all the right things to fans ahead of tonight’s huge clash with Wolves, with the manager knowing the crowd at St Andrew’s must be loud if his side are to secure a positive result.

Thousands will make the short trip down the M6 from Wolverhampton, and the noise from the away end is sure to be a spectacle.

The challenge Birmingham face this evening has not gone unnoticed by Cotterill, and he knows just how difficult a task his side have.

By praising the fans and getting them on-side ahead of the game, the gaffer has provided his side with a huge boost which will aid in their chances of pulling off a shock result.
