Steve Cotterill issues encouraging transfer update for Birmingham fans

According to the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham City manager Steve Cotterill has stated his desire to keep midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld at St Andrew’s after the January transfer window.

A report in the Hull Daily Mail claimed that the Blues’ fellow strugglers Sunderland, as well as Hull City, have an interest in the Dutchman, who runs out of contract at the end of the season.

He has started every league game for Birmingham since October and Cotterill used that as evidence of just how central the 27-year-old is to his plans and his hopes of dragging the club away from the relegation mire.

He said: “I want Kief to stay, I think I have made that clear anyway. I think I have picked him in every game he has been available for.

“I like Kief, I like what he does for the team. He is a really good lad, I have a fantastic relationship with him and I want Kief to stay.”

The Verdict

Cotterill is right – Birmingham simply cannot afford to let Kieftenbeld leave in this window and he certainly cannot sign for a rival in the relegation dogfight.

There have been many comings and goings over the last 18 months at St Andrew’s but the midfielder came in during Gary Rowett’s reign, which was built on organisation, desire and team spirit.

Those are the qualities that the club now needs to get them out of trouble and Cotterill will be looking to Kieftenbeld to provide them.
