Steve Cotterill has endured a tough start as Birmingham City boss and the club are sitting in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's home game against Nottingham Forest.

After a win in his first game against Cardiff, things have turned quickly for the former Bristol City manager. Blues are without a win in the subsequent four games and haven't even scored a goal.

And, there was mixed news on the injury front before the game against Forest.

Cotterill has revealed that Craig Gardner has been having treatment on a calf injury and is therefore a doubt for the clash on Saturday. Although, the ex-Aston Villa midfielder has only played one minute under the current boss.

There was better news surrounding goalkeeper David Stockdale. The club also announced that Cotterill stated the ex-Brighton man is 'getting closer' to returning and the manager praised his work ethic and determination during his recovery process.

However, a date was not set on his return and it appears there is still work to be done before Stockdale can get back out on the pitch after breaking a bone in his arm.

The Verdict

Birmingham need everybody they have fit and available so even though Gardner was out of favour, it's a blow as Cotterill must've been considering him following the abject performance at Barnsley.

The Stockdale news is much more promising and whilst Tomas Kuszscak has done reasonably well in his place, there's no doubting Stockdale would be a massive boost.

He has proven himself over the years and was one of the best keepers in the division last season, so Blues really need him back soon.
