Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has delivered his thoughts on academy graduates Joe Rodon and Ben Cabango starting as the club's centre-back partnership on Saturday.

The Swans ran out 3-1 winners against Huddersfield Town at The Liberty on Saturday and it was the selection of the two exciting young defenders which had plenty of fans talking after the match.

Ahead of their midweek clash with Fulham, Cooper was quizzed further on his thoughts on the duo.

"It adds to the story," he told his pre-match press conference when commenting on the pair's route through the academy, reported by Wales Online (13:36).

"I just wanted them to play well and help the team pick up points.

"But it’s always nice to see younger players playing, especially when they’ve both come through the academy and they’re both Welsh."

Rodon may still only be 22 but he has already picked up 46 appearances for the club whilst 19 year-old Cabango is reasonably new on the scene, making 13 appearances in his debut campaign in the first-team.

It was Andre Ayew who gave Cooper's side the lead on Saturday, steering home a rebound after Jonas Lossl had parried Aldo Kalulu's strike.

Steve Mounie levelled in the 78th minute but the Swans were not be beaten, with Jay Fulton heading in his second of the season and Jordon Garrick securing the three points.

The verdict

Fans of any club always love to see youngsters from their academy establish themselves in the first-team but when you get a partnership like this forming from it as well, it makes it all the more sweeter.

Both Rodon and Cabango are looking set to push to the very top of the game if they can stay on the right path and fans of the national team will be very excited by the prospect as well.

With Mike van der Hoorn waiting in the wings as he returns from injury it will be interesting to see if he continues with this partnership or not.
