Nottingham Forest face Hull City this weekend in the final day of the normal season.

Forest missed out on automatic promotion earlier this week after losing to Bournemouth but have a place in the play-offs secured.

They go into this game third in the league although level on points with Huddersfield in fourth.

Although they have nothing to really play for in this game, Steve Cooper insists his side are playing for a third place finish as he told Nottinghamshire Live: "We really want to finish third in the league, because I think that's the sign of a team which wins and has the right mentality. We want to take all of that into the play-offs.

"At one stage we were at the bottom, so to be guaranteed fourth and to be able to finish third shows that we're on the right track. It's very important, because it means we've gone to the very end.

"There are a lot of qualities - certainly psychological qualities - we've had to show to go on that journey from bottom to third or fourth. We were fighting for second until the end of the last game. While third is still there, we want to fight for third.

"If we get there, it means we go into the play-offs in great shape. We go into the play-offs in great shape anyway, but we want to try and get another win.

"The teams that succeed are best defined by how they recover from setbacks.

"Any team that wants to succeed, you have bumps in the road along the way and set-backs, so we embrace it. We have shown this year how good a team we are, so I want the players, the supporters and all the staff to feel really positive about how good our form is, how strong the confidence is and how much we love being at this football club."

The verdict:

Although Nottingham Forest have the play-offs secured, Steve Cooper really wants his side to finish third, and it shows just how his attitude has been all year and the fact he want to succeed at every point possible says a lot about the team he has created at Forest.

Furthermore, after a disappointing loss midweek, Cooper's side will be looking to bounce back from this with a good result which can give them another boost in confidence to take forward.

As they go on to face the play-offs next, a result against Hull would ensure the side have some momentum to take into those crucial games which will really work in their favour.

This season, Forest have shown us their ability to come back from poor positions and compete showing just how much fight they have in them as a team.
