Steve Cooper reveals how he is encouraging his Nottingham Forest team ahead of Sheffield United clash

Nottingham Forest travel to Bramall Lane on Saturday for the first leg of their Championship semi-final play-off game.

It hasn’t been long since Steve Cooper’s side last paid a visit to the Blades as they went there in March and were able to come away with a point after a late Ryan Yates header.

However, with what is riding on the game, the atmosphere inside Bramall Lane is sure to be dialled up but Steve Cooper says this is something he wants his team to embrace as he told Nottinghamshire Live: “I think you have to thrive on the atmosphere. Try to not be fearful of it – be the opposite, look forward to it, get ready for it.

“It is a big ground, with passionate and noisy support. But if you want to succeed in life, these are the sot of things you have to embrace and go for.

“It’s no different for us. And for the other play-off games, not just in the Championship but in the other leagues as well.

“If you want to be a team that succeeds, these are games and the moments that you have to commit to, back yourselves and go for it. But go for it our way.

“I don’t know if the previous games against them will count. It wasn’t that long ago we played them.

“But they will have some personnel difference, and we will have some personnel differences, so maybe those things chance. Tactically, I think there will be a lot of similarities. The stadiums will both be full, so that will be similar to the league games.

“Some bits, yes, they might be similar. And some bits, no, because it’s the play-offs! They are different and unique, and the context around it changes.”

The Verdict:

The atmosphere inside Bramall Lane on Saturday is bound to be intimidating as this game is such a big occasion for both teams.

However, Cooper is right in trying to make sure his team embrace the atmosphere because if they do it could really spur them on.

Forest have been to United and got some difficult results before so they are capable of getting the job done so long as they make sure the occasion doesn’t get to them.

That being said, as the manager points out, these games are different to anything else and therefore they will just have to take it as it comes rather than trying to over plan for the event.
