News has emerged that Swansea centre-back Mike van der Hoorn is expected to return from his injury in the next couple of weeks.

WalesOnline reported the news ahead of the side's meeting with Huddersfield Town at The Liberty Stadium this weekend.

The Dutch defender is likely to be back in contention for the Championship clash with West Brom next month after it was first thought that the 27-year-old could be back for the games against Fulham or Blackburn.

He first limped out of the warm-up because of a knee injury on Boxing Day when Swansea visited Brentford before starting and then being substituted in the win over Charlton Athletic on January 2nd.

Swansea manager Steve Cooper said: "The plan for Mike is to be back on the grass middle of next week with a view of doing the best part of ten days of training and being available for West Brom but that’s on the basis that the last stages of rehab go to plan."

The Dutchman has featured 25 times this season across all competitions and scored one goal in the Championship as he has become a big part of the defence at The Liberty Stadium.

He formed a strong partnership with Wales international Joe Rodon during the early months of the campaign before partnering Watford loanee Ben Wilmot following Rodon's injury in October.

Cooper strengthened his options at centre-back in January by bringing in Marc Guehi on loan from Chelsea.

The Verdict

The defender was performing consistently to a high standard before he picked up the injury over the festive period.

He will find it difficult to dislodge the current partnership between Guehi and Rodon at the heart of defence.

Van der Hoorn will have to show that he has returned to full fitness when he returns to training as he fights for a spot in the starting XI.
