Swansea City head coach Steve Cooper has claimed the club will need to be "creative" in their transfer business this summer by entering the loan market.

The 39-year-old was appointed to the role last week after being identified as the stand-out candidate in the club's thorough search for Graham Potter's replacement.

Potter was appointed Brighton manager back in May after a successful debut season in English football management, where he secured a top-half finish for the Swans on limited resources.

Cooper will now be aiming to follow on Potter's good work, but he has conceded that Swansea will need to be proactive in the loan market if the club is to continue its progression.

"Hopefully there will be some additions, we need to be creative, there is no doubt about that," he told the club website.

"We need to look at the loan market, find some deals that are right for the football club. If we do that there is no reason we cannot build.”

The Welshman also added that he will be using his contacts gained through his experience as England Under 17s manager to improve the club's position in transfer dealings.

He said: "There’s no doubt myself and Mike Marsh, plus the other contacts like Leon, will be building on the contacts in the club and hopefully that should give us a good start on what we want to bring in."

The Verdict

It will come as encouraging to Swansea fans that Cooper has a clear strategy in relation to how he wants to take the club forward.

However, the news that this strategy will involve the club leaning on the loan market may produce a mixed reaction, as loan signings do not exactly create long-term stability for a club's playing squad.

Having said this, we saw last season how much Derby benefitted from making good use of the loan market. Lampard used his wide-ranging contacts to achieve this, so there is no reason why Cooper can use his strong connections to replicate this achievement.
