Reading sacked manager Nigel Adkins on Monday night, and handed Steve Clarke the position less then 24 hours later. Adkins was sacked after an awful run of form which finished in a 6-1 defeat to Birmingham City.

The former West Brom manager has also had coaching roles at Chelsea and Liverpool, he signed a two-and-a-half year deal the club.

In his press conference yesterday, he said: “It may be your CV that gets you into a club, but then it’s what you do when you get there that counts.

“I’ve always left clubs with a good reputation, and although I’m not thinking about the day that I leave Reading – when I do I hope everyone looks back and says ‘what a fantastic time we had with Steve Clarke as manager’. That’ll mean the club has been successful and the fans will have enjoyed it, which is the most important thing.

“My teams are disciplined and organised, I like my teams to play football to win. You always want to play well but there are times in a season and stages in a game where maybe you need to understand that things aren’t going so well and you need to find out how to win games from difficult positions. They’ll be a team that wants to win, they’ll be hungry. That’s what I am as a person – I’m hungry and want to do well and I want to feed that to my players.

“Which ever level of players I’ve worked with they have always seemed to enjoy and respond to the training. The way I work on the training pitch seems to get the most out of the players and that’s what I want here. It’s 12 months to the day that I lost my job last year, I’m back in now and can’t wait to be back on the touchline.”

Clarke also revealed that their were funds to sign one or two new players in the January window, despite the club saying that their may not be a lot of business in the new year due to Financial Fair Play.

Clarke's first game for the Royals will be against Watford at the Madejeski Stadium on Saturday.

Reading are currently in 16th place in the Sky Bet Championship table, and have accumulated 25 points thus far.
