Reading boss Steve Clarke has accepted that the performance of his side in Tuesday night's loss to Wigan was "rubbish" and said that he was "embarrassed to be coach of a team that plays like that".

Steve Clarke's men were defeated 1-0 by Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night

The Royals went into the game at the Madejski on the back of victory in the FA Cup at Derby on Saturday with new signing Yakubu coming off the bench to seal the win with his first goal for the club. Wigan on the other hand traveled to Berkshire without a win in eight games.

A debut goal from centre back Jason Pearce on 17 minutes was enough for the Latics to head back to Wigan with all three points.

"We deserved to lose. It was rubbish." Clarke told the club's official website.

"A little bit of me is embarrassed to be coach of a team that plays like that, especially first half." Said Clarke, who replaced former manager, Nigel Adkins, in December last year. "Not a good game, not a good performance and obviously a terrible result.

"We didn't turn up for the first half, we allowed Wigan to get in front and the second half was a consequence of the first half performance, not acceptable."

The Royals have only won twice in six games at home under the former West Brom boss, and it is an issue he is keen to address:

"It's something I've got to look long and hard at, I need to find a different way to play at home. Maybe I need to change the team a little bit.

"When you see us play away, by and large the performances have been good but here, the performances are of a team that's going to fight relegation. We've got two away games before Forest here so it gives me time to try to find a solution."

Clarke has until next weekend to solve the problem before they host Nottingham Forest on the 28th, with trips to Ipswich Town and Huddersfield before that.
