Steve Bruce shares update on West Brom pair ahead of club’s meeting with Barnsley

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Conor Townsend and Kyle Bartley are both set to miss West Bromwich Albion’s clash with Barnsley at The Hawthorns tomorrow.

Townsend will be unavailable for selection due to the fact that he picked up a knock against Reading and is expecting his partner to give birth to his child.

Meanwhile, Bartley suffered an ankle injury in training earlier this week and thus will not be fit enough to feature for the Baggies on Saturday.

Bartley has been an ever-present in West Brom’s side this season as he has managed to produce some assured displays in the heart of defence.

In the 39 league games that he has participated in, the 30-year-old has helped his side keep 15 clean-sheets in the Championship.

Townsend meanwhile has been utilised as a full-back and as a central-defender by the Baggies during the current campaign.

West Brom will be hoping to end what has been an underwhelming season on a positive note by securing all three points in this weekend’s clash with the Tykes.

Ahead of this game, Bruce has shared an update on Townsend and Bartley.

Speaking to West Brom’s official website about this pair, Bruce said: “There will be no Kyle Bartley or Conor Townsend on Saturday.

“Kyle twisted his ankle in training on Wednesday and that will rule him out of the Barnsley game.

Quiz: Have each of these 25 ex-West Brom players ever played in the Premier League?

Has former West Brom player Rekeem Harper ever played in the Premier League?

“There will be no Conor Townsend either.

“He’s still carrying a knock on his ankle which he picked up at Reading and his partner has gone into labour so he’ll be missing too.”

The Verdict

West Brom will need other members of their squad to step up to the mark in the absence of Bartley and Townsend on Saturday.

Matt Clarke could be drafted in as a replacement for Bartley as he has made 32 appearances for the Baggies during his loan spell at the club.

Meanwhile, Zac Ashworth may be handed another opportunity to showcase his talent as the Baggies look for somebody to fill the void left by Townsend.

Ashworth made his second appearance of the season for the club in their 1-0 win over Reading last weekend and will be keen to impress Bruce.
