Steve Bruce has admitted he may have "got it wrong" by selecting midfielder Barry Bannan for Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road.

Bannan, who missed Wednesday's 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest the previous Tuesday, struggled to make an impact against Leeds, having trained just once in the build up to the match because of a hamstring issue.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star about his decision to select the Scotsman, Bruce admitted: "If anyone could have found a pass, it was him (Bannan) but he hasn’t trained all week and at times it looked that way as well.

"It was a big call for me and maybe I got it wrong."

Jack Harrison's 65th minute strike was enough to win the game for Leeds, and Bruce admitted he was impressed by the performance of Marcelo Bielsa's side, adding: "Their intensity, fitness levels were excellent, they came out of the gate very quickly.

"They come and press you. They don’t do anything against you that any other team doesn’t do but they do it with an intensity and a quickness."

While the win moves Leeds back into an automatic promotion spot, Bruce's Owls now sit six points adrift of a play-off spot with just four games of the season remaining.

The Verdict

It may not have paid off, but it feels hard to blame Bruce for his decision on Bannan.

The Scot has been one of Wednesday's best performers this season, so if there's a chance he's available in for one of the most important games of the season, it's a chance Bruce has to take.

It may not have paid off, but that is something Bruce can work on now for next season when, if their form under him so far is anything to go by, they will be able to make a full, season long push for a play-off spot.
