Aston Villa are poised for Andre Green’s return to training next week, with the winger edging closer to a return following a lengthy injury lay-off, reports the club’s official Twitter account (@AVFCOfficial).

Green made a positive start to the 2017/18 season, featuring regularly under Steve Bruce during the opening weeks of the Championship campaign, making six appearances across all competitions and scoring his first senior goal for the club in the 4-2 victory over Norwich City.

However, Green has struggled with hamstring problems, and earlier this season underwent an operation, which has ruled the 19-year-old out of action since September.

Bruce was able to provide a positive update on Green, confirming that Villa were expecting the winger to be back in full training at the start of next week, after progressing well on his route back from injury.

Green will return to a squad who have lost just twice since mid-August and put themselves in serious promotion contention heading into the festive period.

Bruce’s side face Derby County tomorrow at the Pride Park Stadium, where Villa will be tested against another play-off hopeful.

Villa are set to be without Chris Samba, Alan Hutton and Henri Lansbury this weekend, with the trio joining a long list of absentees at Villa Park.

The Verdict

Green’s return will be another boost for Villa heading into the New Year, and another reminder of just how well the club have done without a number of key players in recent months.

The 19-year-old looked settled in Villa’s starting XI prior to his injury, and there is no doubt that Green has a key role to play in the coming months, as Villa go in search of a Premier League return.
