Aston Villa will target striker Abel Hernandez if they go up this season, according to the print edition of the Daily Mirror via Sky Sports News.

Hernandez is set to leave Hull City when his contract expires at the end of this season, meaning that he will be available to snap up on a free transfer.

Villa manager Steve Bruce was the man who brought Hernandez to England back in 2014 and now he wants a reunion with his former forward.

Aston Villa previously tried to sign the 27-cap Uruguay international under Bruce but could not agree on a transfer fee for him.

Hernandez scored 20 goals in the Championship two years ago and returned from a long-term Achilles injury to fire Hull to safety this season with eight goals in eight starts.

However, his Premier League stats are less impressive with eight goals and four assists in 49 games for the Tigers in the top flight.

Bruce will be hoping that the 27-year-old can improve in the Premier League as he competes with Jonathan Kodjia, Scott Hogan, Keinan Davis and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy if they go up.

Villa could also pursue a deal for prolific striker Lewis Grabban, who has impressed while on loan.

The Villains face competition from Newcastle for Hernandez but will hope that links with Bruce will be a factor.

The Verdict

This could prove to be a very shrewd piece of business for Villa. Although Hernandez is yet to light the Premier League up, he is now entering the prime of his career and could thrive under Bruce again. On a free transfer, this one is definitely worth a gamble.
