Sheffield Wednesday have had a good time of things under new manager Steve Bruce, and they will head into next season with plenty of optimism in terms of fighting for the top six.

The Owls have really turned things around under Bruce, but there has been more success for the club lower down their internal footballing pyramid, with their under-18 team winning their respective division and also in with a shout of winning the cup too.

And Bruce has been impressed with what he has seen by his young Owls stars, issuing the challenge to them to break into the first-team in the coming seasons.

"It is a terrific achievement for them. Well done to them. It is great that they have taken that first step and won something but can they all be knocking on my door in the next couple of years to get into the first-team squad?" Bruce told the Sheffield Star.

Wednesday have sat back and watched rivals United produce a plethora of top talent over the last decade, but this season they have seen the likes of Matthew Penney and Ash Baker break into the first-team picture, something which will encourage Brue going forward.

Bruce admitted he loves to see young talent make an impression, harking back to his days with Sunderland and Birmingham to give prime examples.

"There is nothing quite like a young one coming through and I have had it at a few places. I had it with Darren Carter when I was manager at Birmingham and I gave Jordan Henderson his debut at Sunderland." Bruce added.

Wednesday take on Preston North End and QPR in their final two games of the season with a chance of a play-off spot not quite over yet.
