Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce has insisted it was a mistake to risk Achraf Lazaar in last night’s victory over Brentford, with the left-sided loanee picking up an injury.

Lazaar joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Newcastle United during the January transfer window, with the 27-year-old making an impressive start to life at Hillsborough.

There was an impressive debut at left-back for Lazaar on Saturday in the 3-1 victory over Swansea City, with Bruce again keeping faith with the Newcastle man against Brentford.

However, Lazaar lasted just over half-an-hour last night, with a hamstring injury forcing him from the field.

And, Bruce has revealed to Dom Howson at the Sheffield Star that he made a mistake risking the player: “Possibly my biggest mistake was playing him tonight, although Foxy (Morgan Fox) wasn't 100 per cent. The kid has been on such a high and had a wonderful debut.

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing but maybe I should have protected him a bit because he has done a hamstring and it doesn't look perfectly good to be honest."

Despite the setback of losing Lazaar early on, the Owls went on to win 2-0 against the Bees, with Steven Fletcher’s brace the difference at Hillsborough.

That means it is seven unbeaten for the Owls now heading into Monday’s Steel City derby with Sheffield United.

The Verdict

Bruce obviously has a lot of regret over this, with it an obvious setback for the in-form Owls.

Lazaar was offering something good on the left and if they lose him for an extended period, Bruce will feel guilty.

However, what’s done is done, with focus needing to turn to the next game and getting the loanee back as soon as possible.
