Steve Bruce has admitted that he does not yet know what his budget will be for his first full transfer window at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.

The Owls boss, who was appointed in early January but did not actually take over until the start of February this year, has impressed during his time at Hillsborough, keeping the club's play-off hopes alive long after they looked to have gone.

They still have a slim chance of making the top six, but as they sit six points adrift with just four games of the season remaining that appears to be a long shot. A season long push for the top spots under Bruce next campaign seems a more achievable goal, but even that appears to have had an early spanner put in its works.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Friday's trip to league leaders Norwich, Bruce revealed he was yet to be told his budget for next season, saying: "I’ve never really asked the chairman anything about finances.

"Even when I met him about the job it was just ‘let’s get on with it,’ you know? I’ll know more in the next week or so. But there have been (financial) restrictions over the last 12 months, everybody is aware of that. So we’ll see where we are."

Since taking over at Hillsborough, Bruce has lost two of his 14 games in charge, although both of those defeats have come in Wednesday's last three games.

The Verdict

You feel like this should be a bit of a concern for Wednesday fans.

Bruce has shown since arrival at the club that he is capable of bringing success to the club, but the fact that he has yet to be given a budget to plan on means he could find himself being left behind by other clubs in the division.

That is not something Wednesday can really afford to allow to happen.
