Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Steve Bruce has ruled Aston Villa out of signing Jack Wilshere from Arsenal this summer.

Surprise reports emerged earlier this week that Villa were looking to sign Wilshere from Arsenal, as Bruce looked to bolster his options at Villa Park.

Wilshere has found his opportunities limited at the Emirates Stadium under Arsène Wenger over recent years, with injuries and lack of form seeing him lose his place at both Arsenal and International level.

Last season the 25-year-old spent the year on-loan with AFC Bournemouth, where he struggled to make a major impact in the Premier League, featuring on just 27 occasions.

With time running down on his Arsenal contract, Wilshere was linked with a move to Villa Park, but Bruce has denied that speculation, saying: “I don’t know where that comes from…”

A loan move to Villa Park is the only affordable option for Villa and Wilshere, with the Sky Bet Championship outfit battling against Financial Fair Play punishments following a big-spending year.

Bruce has made it public knowledge that he is looking to strengthen his attacking options between now and the end of the month, as he looks to add more goals to his side after a disappointing start to the season.

Jonathan Kodjia’s injury is proving to be a problem for Villa, and following Scott Hogan’s recent setback, Gabby Agbonlahor is the club’s only recognised senior striker.

The Verdict

Villa’s supporters will be glad to hear that there is no truth in the links with Wilshere, as the midfielder is not what Bruce’s side are missing.

Whilst Wilshere has plenty of qualities, it is doubtful his body would be able to cope with the physical side of the Championship.

Villa’s start to the Championship season has been disappointing and Bruce will be turning to more experienced players to pull the club through a difficult spell.
