Steve Bruce has told Aston Villa's official website that the club will try to sign Sam Johnstone in the summer.

Sam Johnstone is currently serving a half season loan at Aston Villa after arriving from Premier League giants Manchester United in January.

The former England youth goalkeeper is highly rated by Jose Mourinho but he is currently behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old got off to a shaky start in B6 but he has since turned things around.

His recent form has been impressive and he has conceded just one goal in his last six games as Villa have stormed up the table.

Steve Bruce is a big fan of Johnstone and will talk to Jose Mourinho to convince him that a permanent move to Aston Villa would be the best thing for Johnstone's career.

Speaking to the Villa official website, Bruce said:

“I am going to see Mr Mourinho.

“Everyone agrees that Sam needed to go and play football.

“The difference between him now and three months ago is there for all to see.

“He’s grown into the role. He’s now more comfortable in the role – and he’s got that from playing.

“We have given him that platform to play.

“If there’s an opportunity that we can get him to play more next season I would love to do it.

“I will be having that conversation with Mr Mourinho when the time is right. But I hope we can extend it.”
