Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has been sidelined for four to six weeks, potentially ruling him out of a January transfer to the Championship.

The Magpies striker has been one of the EFL’s most sought-after striker, given his form for Newcastle when they were relegated plus his form for West Brom last season whilst on-loan at the Hawthorns.

In his last two seasons at Championship level, Gayle has netted 47 league goals in 72 appearances, something that barely anyone has been able to replicate in the league in that time.

His ability in the Championship and potential availability coincides with the fact that Leeds are in desperate need of a striker in this window, given the combination of a lack of goals from Patrick Bamford and the recall of Eddie Nketiah, meaning the Whites have just one senior striker at the moment in the squad.

Bamford currently has 10 league goals after 26 appearances, which isn’t totally catastrophic from a striker, but given the chances that Leeds create, he has had the opportunity to double that by now. At this stage last season, Gayle was on 14 goals and six assists for the Baggies.

There hasn’t been much in the way of interest from the Leeds contingent for Gayle’s signature this season as he may not be the player that fits a ‘Bielsa system’, given his style of play, but his goalscoring touch wouldn’t go amiss in this current team and their current situation. Leeds are clearly in the market for a proven goalscorer though, given their current interest in other Premier League strikers.

However, Leeds, and any other side who harboured a potential interest in Gayle, have been hit with a huge blow as Steve Bruce confirmed that Gayle would be out for ‘at least a month’ with injury.

Leeds fans have typically clamoured for signings of Gayle’s ilk recently, considering he has the qualities of what they need. Here, we take a look at how fans have reacted to the news that Gayle has been ruled out for a lengthy period...
