Derby County are set to miss out on a place in this year’s Sky Bet Championship playoffs, according to statistic-based sports website FiveThirtyEight.

The results, as revealed in The Derby Telegraph, suggest Gary Rowett’s men will miss out on a place in the top-six by just two points, with Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa claiming the final spot in the end of season shoot-out.

The system devised by FiveThirtyEight suggests the Rams have an 18% chance of being promoted with a 29% chance of making the top-six, but Rams fans will be pleased to see the system suggest they will finish above fierce local rivals, Nottingham Forest.

A wide range of data was inputted into the system to produce the results, but Rams boss Rowett will pay little heed to the outcome as he chases a Premier League return for his side.

The Verdict

The use of supercomputers to predict the results of football matches and tables has become an extremely popular practice in recent years, with statisticians eager to be the first to correctly predict the outcome of results.

Of course many things can change over the course of a 46-game campaign, and traditionalists will scoff at the data put forward by FiveThirtyEight.

It is interesting to see exactly what these machines throw out in terms of results, and they are certainly much more accurate than psychic goats or crocodiles.

However teams will do their talking on the pitch, and that is what Rowett will focus upon this season.
