A joint statement has been released by the leading English football authorities that reveals the next 48 hours could prove decisive for the promotion hopes of Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion.

All EFL fixtures have been suspended until at least the 30th of April due to the Covid-19 pandemic and there remains great uncertainty of how, if, and when the 2019/20 campaign will be concluded.

Senior representatives from the PFA, Premier League, EFL, and LMA met yesterday to discuss the challenge issues that English football faces at the current time.

A joint statement was released by them last night, which stated that "the overriding priority is the health and well-being of the nation" and that it was unanimously agreed that "football must only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so".

Additionally, the statement revealed that no decisions had yet been made but discussions were set to continue over the next 48 hours on hugely important matters, including the resumption of the 2019/20 season.

Few sides in the EFL will be more desperate for a solution to be found that allows the season to be properly concluded than Leeds and West Brom, who are both well-placed to seal promotion to the Premier League this term.

The pair hold the two automatic promotion spots, with Leeds one point in front of the Baggies at the top of the Championship.

West Brom have a six-point lead on the play-offs spots with just nine games left of the season.

The Verdict

This latest statement suggests that we may get some sort of decision about how, if, and when the 2019/20 season will be concluded in the next 48 hours.

It has been a very difficult period for sides throughout the English football pyramid and suggestions have been made that the season could be made void.

That would likely mean no promotion for Leeds and West Brom, which would be a real nightmare situation.

It is going to be interesting to see what decision, if any, is come to over the next two days.
