After four seasons in League One, Preston North End finally escaped the third tier and back into the Championship after a dominant playoff campaign.

Simon Grayson had done a great job building a squad to win promotion but the Championship was a completely different prospect.

More reinforcements were going to be needed in order to become a competitive second-tier side and this was something that Grayson clearly knew as well.

Ten new faces arrived at Deepdale including the likes of Chris Kirkland, Paul Gallagher, Greg Cunningham, Jordan Pickford and Will Keane.

But he was yet to bring in more options up front, something that they badly needed after an overreliance on Jermaine Beckford in the previous campaign.

On deadline day, their prayers were answered.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

It was a real treat for the Preston fans as two new strikers arrived at once in the form of Stevie May from Sheffield Wednesday and Eoin Doyle on loan from Cardiff.

Both came with plenty of goalscoring pedigree and the fans were very excited by the arrivals:

But they were a pair that were to have very little success.

May certainly had a worse time of it at North End. He was used sporadically in the opening half of the season, racking up just seven appearances.

But then, with just one assist to his name, a nasty knee injury suffered in the first minute of a clash with Fulham ended his season at the end of November.

Only five more appearances for the club followed next season as his career with Preston quickly fizzled out.

Doyle, in comparison, had a better time with the Lancashire club, racking up 44 appearances under Grayson and scoring six goals.

It was underwhelming, but enough for him to earn a permanent move to the club. But a series of loan moves away in the following campaigns confirmed that he was not good enough for the second-tier at all.
