Jaap Stam's start as Reading manager has been an undoubted success.

However, one area of criticism has been his failure to make the necessary changes from the bench in terms of substitutions, and in many scenarios this has cost Reading the game.

You only have to look at Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa to see where the problem lies.

With the side deadlocked at 1-1, some fans were calling for academy graduate Dominic Samuel to come on up top for the less mobile Yann Kermorgant. However, Stam chose to bring on Danzell Gravenberch, a centre back or defensive midfielder by trade, on up front instead.

After a busy summer, Stam has some excellent options off the bench, but is currently choosing not to use them, constantly making defensive substitutions when attacking input is needed.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Harry Smith identifies TWO Reading players Jaap Stam should definitely look to use for an impact off the bench...

The French winger can play out wide or up top, and his pace and power could give tiring Championship defenders nightmares off the bench this season.

It's hardly been an easy start to life at Reading for the former PSG youngster, after picking up a couple of injuries in the opening months of the season before being diagnosed with Appendicitis.

However, he's finally recovering back to full fitness, and if Stam chooses to utilise him more often off the bench in the coming months, he could really add something different to this Reading side.

Liam Kelly

A clever free-kick strike that went viral and a goal from inside his own half for the Irish youth set-up put Liam Kelly at the top of the list for young talents coming through the ranks at Reading.

That was three years ago though, and fans were fearful that he may have lost his way.

However, after a solid season for the Under-21's, Kelly looked set to replace the departed Oliver Norwood when he jumped ship to Brighton in the summer.

He's found himself on the bench so far this season, but his low centre of gravity and eye for a pass could make him an excellent option off the bench for Stam.
