Jaap Stam’s start as Reading manager has been an undoubted success.
However, one area of criticism has been his failure to make the necessary changes from the bench in terms of substitutions, and in many scenarios this has cost Reading the game.
You only have to look at Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa to see where the problem lies.
With the side deadlocked at 1-1, some fans were calling for academy graduate Dominic Samuel to come on up top for the less mobile Yann Kermorgant. However, Stam chose to bring on Danzell Gravenberch, a centre back or defensive midfielder by trade, on up front instead.
After a busy summer, Stam has some excellent options off the bench, but is currently choosing not to use them, constantly making defensive substitutions when attacking input is needed.
