Many Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been debating whether Garry Monk is making the right decision to freeze Sam Hutchinson out of the first team picture over the last few weeks.

Hutchinson has been left out of the Owls’ matchday squad during each of Sheffield Wednesday’s last four matches, despite Monk’s side suffering a dip in from and sliding down the Championship table, and the midfielder continued to be absent from the squad in their 1-0 defeat at Luton Town in midweek.

The midfielder has been able to deliver some effective performances for the Owls when he was something of a regular earlier on in the campaign, with Hutchinson having made 23 Championship appearances this term before he was frozen out of the first team picture.

A similar situation happened with the 30-year-old during Jos Luhukay’s unsuccessful spell in charge of the club, with Hutchinson again having been frozen out of the first team squad despite the Owls even being somewhat depleted through injuries during that period.

The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer, and the way things stand at the moment, it is unlikely that he will be extending his stay with the club beyond the season, but the midfielder will be hoping he can get himself back into contention for the first team squad so he can perhaps end his time with the Owls on a more positive note.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Monk offered his thoughts on the Hutchinson’s continued absence from the first team squad, saying: "I make decisions. There’s things you make decisions for. Not just football – other things. Lots of things go on in squads."

"At this moment in time, there’s the squad and I pick the squad to try and win games. I try and send them out with some confidence and belief to win games and I’ll continue to do that whoever I pick."
