Having been in League Two for four years after winning promotion from the Conference in 2012, Mansfield were determined to push up the table.

Promotion was the ultimate target and that will have been the motive when Steve Evans was appointed manager in November 2016 after Adam Murray was sacked.

The former Rotherham and Leeds United boss guided them to a mid-table finish that season but hopes were high that with a summer to build his side, Evans could lead the Stags to success.

16 new faces arrived at Field Mill in the summer of 2017 as the Scot instigated his anticipated reshuffle, with 16 players also leaving the club.

The season got off to a good start and by the time the January window rolled around Mansfield were sat in the League Two playoff places and in with a great chance of promotion.

Three new faces arrived in January as he looked to give his side an edge and add another promotion to his CV.

Just a month after the transfer window shut, however, some big news broke.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

On February 27, with Mansfield sat fourth in League Two and just a few points away from the automatic promotion places, Evans and his assistant Paul Raynor quit.

It was undoubtedly a huge blow to the Stags' hopes of winning promotion to League One. Evans had finally finished assembling his side and now he had walked.

The decision came just days after Peterborough United, a club close to Evans in terms of geography and sentiment, had parted company with their own manager Grant McCann with the club sat just outside the League One playoffs.

It all felt a little too convenient and, unsurprisingly, it was not a move that went down at all well with the fans.

It only reinforced the reputation he had built himself for being a less than likeable person...

And magically, just a day later, Evans and Raynor were appointed as manager and assistant manager at the Posh.

Swindon Town boss David Flitcroft was brought in to try and salvage the Stags' season and continue the push for promotion but could only manage an eighth-place finish.

After another huge overhaul of players in the summer, Peterborough currently sit third in the League One table under Evans whilst Mansfield continue to battle for the playoff places in League Two under Flitcroft.

It is safe to say that Big Steve is somebody who will be far from welcome at Field Mill for a long, long time.
