Swansea City striker Borja Baston is the subject of transfer interest from Spanish sides Deportivo La Coruna and Espanyol, according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque.

Borja was widely expected to leave Swansea after returning from his loan spell at Alaves over the summer, but he instead made a strong contribution during Swansea's impressive start to the season as he scored five goals in the first five league matches.

However, the Spaniard has only managed to find the net once in his 13 appearances since then, and his barren goalscoring run means he has now lost his starting place in the Swansea side to on-loan striker Sam Surridge.

Borja's current situation means it now appears as though he could be on the move in January - with his Swansea contract set to expire over the summer - and Deportivo and Espanyol are reportedly in the race to bring him back to Spain.

The 27-year-old has embarked on two loan spells back to La Liga since moving to Swansea from Atletico Madrid in 2016, with the striker having spent seasons at Malaga and Alaves, and it now seems he is eventually destined for a return to his homeland.

The Verdict

It looked as though Borja would be a key player for Swansea this term following his strong goalscoring start to the season, but he has failed to replicate this form since August, and the Swans may now be looking to offload him in January.

Borja was a big-money signing for the club in the summer of 2016 which means his salary is likely to be taking up a significant chunk of the wage bill, and his permanent exit would now be the best move for all parties concerned.

Swansea must ensure they have adequate attacking resources in place before sanctioning Borja's exit, but this would surely be the best decision with regard to Swansea's financial sustainability and long-term prospects.
