Clifford, 23, the most high-profile player of the five, began his career in Ireland before making the switch to England to sign for Chelsea.

Clifford made numerous loan moves during his time at Stamford Bridge before he was released, without making any first-team appearances.

The Republic of Ireland youngster then moved to Leicester City, then signing for Southend United in 2013, where he made 42 appearances.

Southend United boss, Phil Brown, confirmed that those who were transfer listed will have limited opportunities at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers are expecting new arrivals, with Jake Cassidy signing on-loan from Wolves and Adam Barrett signing on a six-month deal today.

Phil Brown said to BBC Sport: "We have had various meetings looking at our squad and what is required to obtain promotion this season,"

"We feel the need to bring in some players to help us achieve that goal in terms of goal threat and also additional experience."

"The changes, which are in progress now, will limit the opportunities for these players and I decided it was best to let them try and find a club now to help them progress their careers by going somewhere and playing, rather than wait until the summer, when significant numbers of players become free agents."

Brown also spoke about his captures of Jake Cassidy and Adam Barrett "I'm really pleased to have brought Jake to the club,"

"He's scored goals at a higher level and, despite his young age, has experience of playing games. It's a fantastic signing for us."

On Adam Barrett he added "He's a real leader and a fans' favourite during his time at the club previously.

"He's determined, knows the division very well and has a determination and desire to do well here and help us achieve our goals."

Southend United find themselves 6th in Sky Bet League Two, nine points away from table-toppers Wycombe.
