Southend United have signed midfielder Gary Deegan on an initial three-month contract, the club have confirmed.
The 26-year old was released by Northampton Town at the end of last season and has been on trial with Southend over the last few weeks.
He began his playing career in Ireland for Shelbourne and had spells at Kilkenny City, Longford Town, Galway United and Bohemians.
Deegan moved to England with Coventry City in 2010 before a year in Scotland, playing for Hibernian in the 2012-13 season.
The Irishman then returned back to England for the Cobblers last summer and made 30 appearances during his year at Sixfields.
Deegan will be available for the Shrimpers League Two game against Carlisle United on Saturday.
